General Guidelines
All of our peer-reviewed
journals are bi-annual (Fall and Spring). There are no
deadlines for submissions. We do not accept letters of inquiry,
abstracts or topic proposals. Please submit your finished work
for peer review. The length of a manuscript can be up
to 50 pages long including tables, graphs, diagrams, photographs, and
equations.
SJI employs an innovative blind review system throughout the
peer-review process. Each
submission is reviewed by three to seven peer reviewers with final
decisions reported to the author, usually within three
months. This is possible because SJI has a growing review board
with more than 4,000 active reviewers. When the majority of
reviewers recommend publication of a paper, and one reviewer
recommends rejection, SJI seeks additional reviewers' opinion to
make the final decision. For specific submission guidelines for
individual journals, please click the link for each journal listed
below.
If your paper is accepted for publication, you will be asked to
submit a License to Publish
agreement along with a processing fee. The fee is in the range of
$99.95 to $199.95 (add $99.95 for each additional author).
Authors in developing countries are eligible to apply for a reduced
fee. To be considered for the discount, you must reside in a
developing country, and be affiliated with an institution in your
country of residence. Please send your request via email
with the following information: full
names of authors, mailing address, phone number, email address, occupation,
position or title, company or organization where you work.
Why is the processing fee necessary? Please read the section
below titled
Why We Charge a Processing Fee.
Your manuscript must be polished
to high
professional standards. Poor quality work with grammatical
errors will
not be sent out for peer reviews. It is a waste of our reviewers'
time. We strongly recommend that you
have your manuscript edited by an experienced editor before submission to SJI.
There are many online professional editing services
that maintain
rapid electronic submission and
turn-around times.
One of the most widely used services is American Journal
Experts (AJE). It provides professional language editing services
to authors around the globe. You may use this service to improve
your paper's English and, therefore, its overall quality. AJE employs expert editors with post-graduate
training in a wide variety of fields who will check your manuscripts
not only for terminology and language specific to your field but
also for proper English usage, grammar, punctuation, spelling, verb
tense, and phrasing. In addition, AJE's professional editors will
make sure the text sounds natural and the sentences are well
constructed. Visit AJE's
Website for more information or to submit a document for their
Paper Editing service.
An
author's use of such services in no way guarantees that his or her
submission will ultimately be accepted by SJI. Any arrangement
an author enters into will be exclusively between the author and
such a company, and any costs incurred are the sole responsibility
of the author.

New
Journal Proposal
If you wish to suggest that we launch a new journal in a particular
field that is not covered by our existing journals,
please contact us via email.
Why we charge a processing fee
Like other open-access journals, we do not charge
subscription fees to readers or libraries. We cover the costs
partially through article processing fees.
Please read the
section on
The Open-Access Movement
in our home page.
Our
expenses are split among editorial costs, electronic composition and
production, journal information system, manuscript management
system, electronic archiving, overhead expenses, and administrative
costs. Moreover, we must cover the costs of publishing the accepted
article plus the cost of reviewing articles the
journals reject for each accepted article.
The experience of SJI and other
open-access journals clearly indicates that researchers and their
host institutions and funding agencies are willing to pay reasonable
and affordable article processing fees for the sake of faster and
fairer access and greater exposure of their work.
The processing fees of SJI are significantly lower than those of
other major open access journals. For example, Biomed Central now
charges $1,700-$1,900 per article while PLoS charges $2,100-$2,750 per
article (learn
more).
For large
publishers, such high processing fees may be necessary to cover the
costs, unless they can generate revenues from additional sources. According to Wellcome
Trust studies, an article production cost in the subscription model
is estimated to be $2,750. The equivalent cost under the article
processing fee model is estimated to be $1,950
(learn
more).
However, SJI is a small publisher that
operates using a lean publishing model, and therefore is
able to maintain a very
low processing fee. Moreover, unlike some traditional and online
journals, we do not charge a submission fee for reviewing a
manuscript for publication consideration.
According to surveys carried out by BioMed Central, many
funding agencies around the world are willing to fund article processing fees (learn
